Gray Martin
In 1984 Gray Martin graduated Cal-Poly Pomona in Plant Science. He then went to work at UC Riverside with the renowned avocado breeder, Dr.
Bob Bergh. After 13 years and three avocado patents, Gray began privately breeding and growing avocados organically. In 1998, George Emerich
and Paul Thomson introduced Gray to dragon fruit. He soon began DeVine Organic Growers, and within three years became the largest
red-fleshed grower of hand-pollinated varieties in the country.
As an experienced fruit breeder, Gray recognized the potential of breeding self-pollinating, white-flesh Vietnamese varieties into the tropical
New World America red-flesh varieties. Gray has devoted more than a dozen years to this extensive breeding project. His talk will describe
this work and insights concerning the prospects of commercial production of dragon fruit in California.
