| Joe Real Born in the Philippines with a passion for growing plants, Joe began planting and appreciating plants at 4 years old. All grown up and in the USA, Joe found himself tinkering with various ways of growing plants in a tiny yard. His solutions to the space limitation included grafting together more than 101 citrus cultivars into one tree, which produces fruit year round. His many multi-multi-grafted fruit trees include 48-n-1 plum, similarly intense apples, blood oranges, pears, persimmons, cherries and others. Joe typically maintains 500 or so fruiting cultivars at a time in a 725 square feet portion of his yard. Practically no fruits from his yard are wasted as he turns any excess into award winning fruit wines. Joe aims to make 500 kinds of fruit wines, and to date has managed to make about 250 different kinds of fruit wines to date. He started out to make vinegar during his 6th grade but it turned into good tasting and very stable fruit wine instead. Ever since, he has been passionately making fruit wine for the past 35 years. With outstanding experience in fruit growing and excellent background in the sciences, he is able to turn various kinds of fruits into exotic wines. Last year, he entered the California State Fair Home Wine Competition for the first time and got four double gold medals, twelve silvers, three bronzes and two honorable mentions for his various kinds of fruit wines.
